  1. When Pip falls into the water, each character has a different attitude towards the incident. Ishmael is the most shocked and concerned, and wants to go back to get Pip. At this point, it appears Starbuck is only mildly concerned, and would rather pursue the whale. Queequeg, when they meet up, says that he would like to search for him, showing a genuine concern for Pip. Captain Ahab seems indifferent, and allows Queequeg to search for Pip.

  2. When Pip first falls overboard Ishamel and Queequeg have different reactions to the situation as opposed to the rest of the crew, particularly Ahab and Starbuck, who are rather indifferent to the problem. When Pip falls overboard, Ishmael is extremely concerned and wants to turn back for him immediately. Queequeg also feels that it is a bad thing because he feels that it will bring black magic upon the ship. Ahab and Starbuck, however, show little to no concern in the problem and they insist on continuing forward to capture the whale. This shows how used whalers are to people falling overboard or dying in the process of trying to capture whales and it doesn’t concern them when it happens to someone else, especially when it is someone who doesn’t serve much of a purpose on the ship, Ishamel and Queequeg are not used to this occurance and are extremely worried for Pip’s well-being.

  3. Well one thing Ahab doesn’t even know that Pip is out with them to catch Moby Dick. Pip snuck on the boat. Ahabs goal is to catch M.B. Starbuck doesn’t even want to go after Moby Dick, he just wants to go after another whale that he sees and ignors what Ismael is trying to tell him about Pip. Queenqueg, I never see him say anything about Pip, only after they have caught the other whale Queenqueg says that they should go back and find Pip. Ishmael is the only person that sees Pip fall into the water and yells at Starbucks that they have to go back and get him. Again no one listens, everbodies goal on all the boats is to catch the whale, make money and they will do it by sacraficing Pip .

  4. When Pip falls overboard, the initial reaction from the crew is to keep going, persue the whale, and get the money. Ishmael is the only one who first notices Pip went overboard and tries to save him by throwing out a barrel so he can stay afloat. If he hadn’t done that, he probably would have drown. When the other whale was killed but not Moby Dick, Starbuck says that Pip was lost at sea and Ahab and Queequeg immediately want to start a search party to get Pip back.

  5. When Pip falls overboard Ishmael immediately takes action. He throws Pip a float and informs Starbuck of the incident. Even with Ishmael pleading to him to around for Pip, Starbuck orders the crew to continue the hunting. He then tells Ishmael that there are two more boat behind them in their wake, who were likely to see Pip and pick him up. Queequeg does not show concern for Pip until after the hunt. The three boats meet up and surround the floating whale carcass. They briefly discuss about what to do in a attempt to find Pip. In this discussion, Ahab shows little interest in searching for him, for he was still was disappointed about the failure to kill Moby Dick. Urged on by both Ishmeal and Queequeg, Starbuck plans for a rescue mission, in which they successfully find Pip.

  6. When Pip falls overboard, the only sign of concern or even acknowledgement initially comes from Ishmael. Queequeg’s reaction isn’t shown at first. Starbuck is concerned with only whaling, as are Ahab and Queequeg. After Moby Dick vanishes, however, Ahab, even thought he doesn’t seem deeply troubled by his disappearance, allows Starbuck and a now eager Queequeg, along with Ishmael, to organize a search party to find Pip. At first, only Ishmael is afraid for Pip’s safety, but after the excitement from the chase dies down, everyone’s (except Ahab’s) genuine concern for Pip surfaces.

  7. As soon as Pip falls overboard, Ishmael is concerned for Pip and constantly tells Starbuck to turn around, but Starbuck is concerned about the whale they had just captured and tells Ishmael to sit and help. Starbuck thinks one of the other boats will rescue Pip. He even describes Pip as “kind hearted” and suggests searching for him when all the boats reunite. Ahab, unknowing about Pip falling overboard, was too concerned about chasing Moby Dick, but once the chase had failed, he organized a search party although by the way he was acting, you could tell all he was thinking about was the white whale. As for Stubb, he is doubtful that they will ever find Pip and is more concerned with the whale they had captured. Queequeg was willing to find Pip as soon as he realized he was gone. He saw it as “bad magic” to leave Pip. Not everyone searched for Pip that night, but when Pip did return back to the ship, they all seemed happy to see him, but Pip’s feeling was opposite.

  8. Pip falls overboard when Starbuck is capturing a whale. Ishmael is the first notice this and urges them to turn back. He is very upset over this incident. He continues to persist that they turn back for Pip even though they are on the verge of capturing a whale. But eventually he saves Pip. Queequeg is similar to Pip. He also wants to save Pip but he is more excited about the whale. Starbuck is more worried about the whale than Pip. He tells Ishmael that some other boat will hopefully pick up Pip but the whale is more important. Captain Ahab is worried about Moby Dick and does not notice Pip. But when he is back he allows Ishmael to look for Pip.

  9. Ahab’s primary concern is Moby Dick and he won’t waste time for any distractions.

  10. When Pip first falls overboard, the first to notice is Ishmael. Ishmael seems the most concerned about the incident, and tries to convince Starbuck, and the rest of the crew to turn back. Starbuck is more concerned with the money he will get from pursuing and catching the whale they have been following, and he along with the crew repeatedly tells Ishmael to sit down and help with the whale. When Starbuck’s boat meets up with Ahab’s boat, Ahab does not seem all that concerned about Pip and questions about the whale they ended up catching. He tells Starbuck that they would be allowed to go and look for Pip after the whale is taken care of. As Starbuck and the crew are trying to convince Ahab, before he changes his mind, Queequeg also stands up and professes his newfound interest in finding Pip only because his new best friend, Ishmael is so concerned.

  11. When Pip suddenly falls overboard, Ishmael is the first to notice. He tries to tell Starbuck that Pip fell overboard, but Starbuck was too preoccupied with the whale that he was trying to catch. So him, along with the rest of the sailors on the boat, tell Ishmael to sit down and help with the whale. Ishmael was the only one who seemed very concerned at that time. Once the boat Starbuck was on caught up with Captain Ahab’s, Starbuck tells Ahab that Pip had fallen into the sea. Ahab doesn’t seem very concerned, especially because he just lost Moby Dick again. At this time, Starbuck does show more concern by asking Ahab if they can do a search for Pip. When Queequeg hears this he immediately jumps up and says he wants to help and find Pip. Ahab allows it, but tells them to take care of the whale they caught first. After that, Starbuck stayed on the Pequod while Ishmael, Queequeg, and some of the other crew members go on a search for Pip.

  12. The fact that Pip had fallen overboard, was the least of Starbuck and Ahab’s worries. They were both too busy trying to catch their whales.Ishmael on the other hand, when seeing Pip fall out of the boat, started yelling to Starbuck that there was a man overboard and that Starbuck should turn around immediately and save him.Instead of listening,Starbuck kept his eyes straightforward on the whale that he was capturing,he also yelled for Ishmael to sit down.Ahab too was very busy with trying to capture his whale,in this case,Moby Dick. All Ahab could think about was capturing that whale and he wouldn’t allow anything to get in the way of it.As soon as Ahab lost his whale, and Starbuck captured his, they noticed Pip was missing.Queequeg stood up explaining he would go find Pip.Ahab ordered a rescue boat and Queequeg and Ishmael were both on it.Those two really cared for Pip and ended up finding him.

  13. The attitudes of the crew when Pip fell overboard varied. Ishmael the one person who noticed Pip fall overboard was the most concerned and wanted to go back to save him. Starbuck was really only interested in catching the whale, he did not seem to really care whether or not Pip was rescued. Queequeg offered to go off and look for Pip which showed that he cared for the boy. Captain Ahab seemed indifferent about the whole situation but did not mind if some of the crew members went off to search for Pip.

  14. While the men where on their first lowering, Pip had stowed away on the boat that included Ishmael and Starbuck. As soon as the whale was harpooned, Pip appears and then falls overboard. The immediate reaction from Ishmael is to save the boy and then keeps aggitating Starbuck to turn around and save him, Pip was Ishamel’s main concern. Starbuck’s reaction had acknowledged Pip’s fall he feels bad at first and then remembers his duty is to be a whaler, so he continues to move towards the whale. Queequeg hears of Pip’s fall and immediately volunteers himself to look for Pip and he will save him he refered to Pip’s fall as Black Magic. Finally Ahab’s concern was to follow Moby Dick and kill him, when Ishamel points out that Pip had fallen he is at first not interested in rescueing the boy but then he allows some shipmates to have a search boat and look for him.

  15. When Pip falls overboad from the small boat, Ismael, Queequeg, Ahab, and Starbuck all have different attitudes on what should happen. Ishmael first throws Pip a barrel so that he can remain a float and yells to Starbuck that he has fallen and yells to go back for him. Starbuck’s first reaction is that he wasnt an important factor at the time and that it was nessecary to press on after the whale. Until it was made known to the rest of the sailors, Queequeg and Ahab had no idea of his falling overboard. Ahab doesnt care to much about the boy and is skeptical to send out a search party at first. Queequeg only wants to go and find the boy because he thinks that it would be “bad majic” to let him die, and that it would end up being bad luck for the entire crew. In the end Ishmael, Queequeg and a few other sailors go to save Pip and end up pulling him out of the water nearly missing the jaws of a shark. They all however are happy that Pip has returned once the are safe back on the Pequod.

  16. When Pip falls overboard, Ishmael immediately wishes to help him, however the Ahab, Queequeg and Starbuck are set on catching a whale and Moby Dick for profits and do not want to turn back. After they catch a sperm whale and do not succeed in catching Moby Dick, Starbuck wanted to organize a search party to look for Pip, because he said that Pip was “a jolly-hearted boy.” Ahab allows him to do so, but only after they get the whale to the boat. Queequeg instantly wishes to go get Pip himself after they catch the whale because he believe that there will be black magic unless they do not do so. They are all happy when Pip is found though.

  17. When Pip falls over board each character acts differently, Captain Ahab at first had no idea that Pip was even on the boat because he was so occupied with trying to catch Moby Dick. Starbuck was more interested in catching a whale and making profit rather than saving someone’s life. Ishmael was very concerned and wanting to turn around and save Pip rather than kill a whale but no one was listenting to him. And finally Queequeg didnt realize he fell over board until after Moby Dick got away, once he knew about Pip being gone he quickly responded “i’ll go find Pip.” Queequeg has a very big heart and cares for everyone

  18. When Pip falls overboard Ishmael is the first to notice. He seems to be more concerned than anyone else about saving Pip, perhaps becaseu it is his fist time whaling and he hasn’t experienced as many deaths at sea, especially of children. Ishmael alerts Starbuck as soon as he sees that Pip is overboard and says that they need to rescue him immediately but Starbuck is concentrated on catching the whale that they are after. Once they have caught the whale he seems a little more concerned about Pips rescue. He tells Captain Ahab that he has fallen overboard and that they should send a small search party to look for him. Ahab seems mildly concerned for Pip, once the discraction of chasing Moby Dick is gone, and agrees to send out a search party. Queequeg seems as concerned about Pip as Ishmael is and offers to jump in and find Pip himself because he believes it will be “bad magic” if Pip dies. His offer is rendered unnecessary once the search party is agreed to.

  19. During the first attempt to capture Moby Dick. Pip falls overboard. Immediatly, Ishmael notices and throws him a floating device and lets Starbuck know. He wants to save him but he the rest of crew is not willing to lose the kill so they go foward. After they kill the whale and Ahab returns from chasing Moby Dick Starbuck wants to go and look for Pip saying that he is jolly and good hearted. Ahab at first doesn’t know anything about Pip falling off or even being in one of the lowered boats but he always Starbuck to make a search crew lead by Mr. Buckington. Queequeg offers to go and search for the boy because if dies out at sea then it will be bad magic and bad for the trip out at sea.

  20. Intially Strabuck just wants to kill the whale and treat as any other, however the other crewmates including Queeqeg and Ishmiael are invogarated at the chance to kill the coveted white whale. Later Pip, whom ahd snuck onto the boat, falls off and throws the entire party off track. Ahab has a ver close relation to Pip seeing Pip as an image of himself in his youger years, due to Ahab’s strong eelings towards Pip he diverts all attention to saving Pip. This demoralizes Queeqeg and Ishmiael and simply infuriates Starbuck. Starbuck is angry because the same white whale that had compromised the entire voyage was now slipping out of the grip of the crew, Starbuck knew this would only further fuel Ahab’s passion and obsession with killing the whale, this greatly demoralizes Starbuck and leads to a later conflict between Ahab and Starbuck.
