Based on the discussion about Affirmative Action in yesterday’s class, define Affirmative Action, explain why it was established, who it has helped historically and if it is still needed. Lists at least three reasons why it is or is not still needed.

I do not think that we should eliminate affirmative action in the United States. As a white person from a middle class family it would be very easy for me to say eliminate it all together however as a female I can see what a difference affirmative action has made. I can get almost any job a male can and I have many of my rights to thank to the work of affirmative action. Although I cannot relate to the struggles that other races and minorities experience I will always support programs that help promote equality even though such equality may not be attainable for the whole world any progress in progress in my mind. Another reason for affirmative action is education. I firmly believe that every woman, male, child has the right to education. With affirmative action not only have women dawned campuses but also minorities who otherwise would not be able to afford education. Finally, it is evident that discrimination is still prevalent in our society today. Affirmative action strives to eliminate such instances in the work field giving everyone who is qualified for the job, no matter their race, an equal chance at the job.
Affirmative Action is a term that refers to actions and policies that take race and gender into account in order to provide equal opportunities for everyone (jobs, eductation, etc). It was established in order to correct racial and gender associated wrongs of the past. It is most notable for it’s effective way of getting women into the workplace.
The day that we no longer need affirmative action is the day that racism and sexism cease to exist. Unfortunately that day has not yet come and I don’t see it coming for a long long time. I know some people would like to believe that we live in an age where people don’t take race into account. Many people claim that they “don’t see race”. I am not trying to insult anyone when I say that to think that racism and sexism are no longer an issue in America is completely ignorant. Many people argue that the racial issues of the past happened so long ago that their generation has no guilt for things like slavery. Let me present something here. My mother(who is under sixty years old) was alive during the civil rights movement of the sixties. If my own mother can remember a time where schools weren’t integrated, why should she not feel like African Americans don’t deserve things like affirmative action. I mean, everyone in our religion class was alive for the 1992 Los Angeles Race Riots. To say that we are far past any form of racism in everyday society is simply ignorant.
Why it is still needed:
1. Statistically, minorities(including women) are payed less than the majority on a consistent basis.
2. Racism is still a problem in this country, despite a black man being our president.
3. A whole generation of people who experienced our brought upon racism every single day are still a large part of american society. In my opinion it would be disrespectful and would show how truly out of touch some people are with race issues today.
THIS IS AMANDA
I think we still need Affirmative Action in present time. Whether we’d like to think so or not, racism and poverty among minorities still exists and there needs to be programs implemented to ensure that everyone has a fair share at life and equal opportunities. Affirmative Action is “policy and programs to correct past discrimination in educational and employment opportunities, directed against women, blacks, and members of other minorities” (theology IV book). It was established to give everyone an equal chance to support him or herself and/or achieve their ambitions. Historically, these policies and programs have given women the right to vote-even be in the position to govern our nation- and it has also allowed blacks to graduate from high school and college with equal opportunities as those people not of a minority class. The three main reasons we need to have these programs are to 1. Eliminate ties to the past and strive to view everyone equally. 2. Give people who are not in to position to support them the chance to succeed and have a better future. 3. Lessen the gap between the wealthy and poorer class. Collectively, all of these reasons describe the underlying problems with our country and through these programs they can be corrected.
Affirmative Action, in certain respects, is very essential to our country, even today, despite efforts for greater quality amongst all. Affirmative Action can be viewed as a hindrance to some because it causes a seperation and makes a distinct difference, making equality a harder goal to attain. However, Affirmative Action can be used as a means of attaining this greater equality for all. Once everyone can reach the same goals, Affirmative Action can be removed and finally, everyone can strive with all the same circumstances and opportunities.
Affirmative Action is defined as “the policy and programs established to correct past discrimination in educational and employment opportunities directed against women, blacks, and members of other minorities.” While this holds true, Affirmative Action is also the train of thought in which others can be given opportunities not originally afforded to them. It puts everyone in the same competitive playing field, helping to advance this struggle for equality.
Affirmative Action, at its earliest, was established for minorities, mainly blacks and women. It continues to help these minority groups, and reaches even further to help other minority groups, such as hispanics and asians. By placing in programs that give money to poorer, generally black areas, their ability to break the poverty cycle is enhanced. Enforcing equality opportunity acts in the workplace allows women to compete on the same level as men, permitting them the opportunity to make a living for themselves, just the same as men.
Throughout the ages, Affirmative Action has worked, mainly, to help women and black minority groups. These groups in particular because they are the largest group of the minorities within the United States. Historically, these groups have always been at a disadvantage, and helping them in turn helps all.
As of now, Affirmative Action is still necessary in educational and employment arenas. The black minority groups still struggles to break the cycle of poverty and make a larger life for themselves. Generally, the black community live and raise families, generation to generation, in the same area causing a cycle that is comfortable to them. Pushing through the limits of this comfort zone is very hard to accomplish, and through the help of Affirmative Action, their struggle is lightened. Affirmative Action can allow this minority group to have help, either with life and family planning, or affording them the opportunity to go to college, making them reach higher than past generations. Affirmative Action also helps the community of women in the workforce, mainly. An increasing number of women are attaining higher level degrees, allowing them to compete more closely with their male counterparts. Affirmative Action makes employers practice an equal opportunity in hiring and in the workplace. It also helps to give women opportunities to reach higher levels in their education. Finally, Affirmative Action helps all minorities to break out of the traditional stereotypes and restrictions placed on them previously. Through helping them reach equality in education and employment, a generation based on equal opportunity can be raised, furthering efforts to make all things equal among men (and women).
1. At one point, we did need Affirmative Action in the United States. There was a time in our country during which minorities needed affirmative action in order to have equal opportunities and progress towards equalization. Our country, and our society even, strive for equality even if we do so subconsciously. However, now, in the year 2009, we do not need as much affirmative action. In order for people to gain respect from others and respect for themselves, they must work hard for their achievements. This fact is the same despite race, gender, or religion. There are happy and successful people of all genders, races, and religions in the United States. Affirmative action helped to bring us to where we all are in society today, but now hinders us from our greatest goal: equality. If affirmative action persists in the United States, it will only spur on more controversy, and maintain a sense of racism in our country.
2. Affirmative action is a policy or a program that seeks to redress past discrimination against minorities. These programs were established because, at one point in our society, people were so opposed to equality that their prejudices hindered the advancement of our society. Affirmative action has helped women, African Americans, native Americans, Latinos, and all other minorities across the country. We do not still need affirmative action in the United States because
i) Affirmative action is creating more and more separation between people in our country, keeping us from being truly equal. For example, if more financial aid is offered to African Americans, native Americans, or Latinos, over time, they will naturally assume (as would anyone else) that they are not required to work as hard or do as much as someone who was born with a different skin color. If this separation were gone, everyone would have an equal chance, and thus, equal standing in our country.
ii) Much has changed in our society since the 1800s or even the 1960s. Hard working people all over the country are respected for their efforts despite gender or race. Views have changed drastically since the times of segregation and male dominance. We must respect this change, and change our actions accordingly. For example, both a woman and an African American made it very far in our last presidential race. Would this have even happened fifty years ago? It is proof that our country is changing.
iii) Affirmative action has served its purpose in our country. While there was certainly a need for affirmative action in the past, it is not longer a necessity. In order to EARN respect, the government cannot provide a crutch for anyone. While social classes will always exist (or else our entire society and economy would fall apart), this does not mean that there cannot be equality. Personally, I would prefer it if I could PROVE to an employer, school, or social group that I was worthy and respectable rather than it being handed to me. This would give me a priceless feeling of accomplishment, knowing that all of my hard work had paid off.
Affirmative action is the policy and programs established to correct past discrimination in educational and employment opportunities directed against women, blacks, and members of other minorities. The programs accompanying affirmative action were established to decrease the amount of discrimination in the executive and socio-economic world. Historically, it has aided women, blacks, and other minorities. We do need affirmative action, but there are problems that exist within our system now that need to be corrected. Some of these problems include replacing old wrongs with new wrongs, increasing racial tensions, and benefitting the more privileged people within minority groups at the expense of the disenfranchised within majority groups.
Affirmative action is defined as a policy or a program that seeks to redress past discrimination through active measures to ensure equal opportunity, as in education and employment. Basically, affirmative action is actions taken to fight prejudice or racism. Affirmative action was established because throughout America’s history, there have been many instances where not all people were treated equally. The purpose of this is to provide assistance to those at a disadvantage, like ethnic minorities, women, people with disabilities, and veterans. I believe we still need affirmative action. Although we have gone a long way in terms of equality, not everyone receives equal opportunities still. Also, affirmative action is really helpful to minorities in terms of financial and educational problems. Some people have life harder than others, and they need this assistance to further their life. Lastly, racism is still a problem. Although everyone has the same rights now, people still aren’t treated the way they should be due to their race, color, or even religion.
Affirmative action is all of the programs and laws and stuff that were put in place to try to make past racism and other things correct. it was originally put into effect in order to help promote minorities and women in society, and to help them overcome past inequalities. The groups that have historically benefited most from affirmative action is are the black community and women. However, when affirmative action was first put into action, it is aproven fact that the quality of the education given in public schools dropped immediately due to the fact that black and white school were not equal, and the integrated schools had to be able to acccomodate students coming from both backgrounds. I dont think that affirmative action still need to be in effect. The black community has many wealthy business men and women. Also, many members of minorities have succeded in going to college and have sent their children to school. i also believe that affirmative action has become something that just furthers inequality between groups. if affirmative action was taken away, then all groups would truely be treated equally.
Affirmative Action is the policy and programs established to correct past discrimination in educational and employment opportunities directed against women, blacks, and other minorities. I believe that Affirmative Action is necessary during and for an amount of time after a period that racism and sexism are such common issues that they impede the progress of a certain gender or race.
Affirmative action was necessary in America when women were not allowed to vote or pursue a higher education. Women were oppressed and were not viewed as equal. The actions that showed people’s feelings caused women to be stripped of their dignity. I think that Affirmative action should be used to boost women from their oppressed states to a point where they are either equal or they can reach equality for themselves.
Affirmative Action is necessary after a period of oppression, because the nation was responsible for stripping humans of their dignity and worth. This is an unforgivable act that cannot be repaid. However, we must make efforts to heal old wounds.
Affirmative action is the policy that was established in order to correct past discriminations. Its goal is to create equality in educational and employment opportunities for women, blacks and members of other minorities. I believe that we did need affirmative action in the United States. During the civil rights movements affirmative action was needed to help ensure the rights of the minorities fighting for their rights. While affirmative action has done a lot of good its job is still far from completed. There are still many people who fall in between the cracks. For example, since public schools are often paid for with property taxes, people in poorer areas will not have as good of schools as those in a richer area. With better schools comes more diverse university. Affirmative action will make colleges better by creating more points of view to be learned from. The need for affirmative action is also prevalent in the business world. The top managements of fortune 500 companies are predominantly Caucasian. Affirmative action helps minorities get into the company and possibly work their way up.
I think that affirmative action is still needed today and shouldn’t be eliminated. As much as everyone would like to think that we as a nation are leaning towards equality for all, that isn’t the case. There is still discrimination and unequal justice for many minorities. So affirmative action should be instituted in order to give equally opportunities for all. Affirmative Action is “policy and programs to correct past discrimination in educational and employment opportunities, directed against women, blacks, and members of other minorities” (theology IV book). In the past affirmative action has given equal opportunities for minorities in the work place and with education. Women have also gained equal rights with affirmative action dealing with voting.
3 reasons affirmative action should be kept
1. To give people born in poor homes a chance to make it
2. Give equal opportunities to minorities
3. Help change the future and not create recounts of the racism and discrimination that happened in the past.
Affirmative Action is any kind of action, program, policy etc. that corrects past mistakes. It was established to correct racial and gender related mistakes of the past. Historically it has helped many different minorities. Women have been given the right to vote due to affirmative action and blacks were allowed to graduate high school and attend and graduate college. It is still needed because as humans we make mistakes and sometimes we make big scaled mistakes such as racist and gendered wrongdoings. Any future mistakes that we may make, we can use affirmative action to correct those mistakes.
1. One reason why affirmative action is still needed is because there are still gender related problems. Some people make jokes degrading women, men and children without knowing it is offensive.
2. Also people make racist jokes against blacks, Jews and people of other races without knowing their hurt. It seems funny, but actually is crude and will continue to hurt those of different ethnicities.
3. Everyday more and more minorities are made fun of. Television shows, radio shows and groups everyday make fun of various minorities. Affirmative action can remove these careless jokes.
Affirmative action is “Programs seek to correct past discrimination against minorities and women by increasing recruitment, promotions, retention, and on-the-job training and by removing barriers to admission to educational institutions”
Affirmative action has helped in many ways to prevent racism and help many. White women have had the most help from the Affirmative action, because before women where not able to vote and where not given the opportunity to get jobs. We still need affirmative action, because new types of racism always arise. For example Muslims are treated badly in airports, because of a single accident. Now that this has happen affirmative action has to be used for this situation. Every time there is a new situation evolving racism or any other kind of mistreatment, affirmative action has to be present and that is why affirmative action has to be active until humans seize to exist.
Affirmative action when policies are taken to try and make equal opportunity no matter what race, ethnicity, or gender you are. Affirmative action tries to focus on creating equal opportunity for such things as jobs, education, and health care. I do believe that we still need equal opportunity because without affirmative action females would not have the same chance as men to have whatever job they want, the lower class would not be able to have health care, and because you are a certain ethnicity you wouldn’t have the same chance as someone who was a different ethnicity. It is hard for me to understand and feel what certain races, genders, and ethnicities are going through but I am always willing to support any type of program that promotes equal opportunity. I think that it is important for affirmative action to never decease because it has allowed certain races, genders, and ethnicities to do things they have never been able to do before.
1.It has allowed women to vote and be in a position to try and run for president of the United States.
2.It has allowed blacks to have an education with equal opportunity.
3.And without it we would still be a segregated nation
Affirmative action is still very necessary in the United States. Merely because racism still exists, despite the intense, valiant efforts that have been made to combat it. Affirmative action works to create equality across the board for everybody, and it is put in place when things seem to be getting out of control. I honestly do not think there will ever be a time where affirmative action is unnecessary. There will always be some sort of disadvantage for a certain set of people, where affirmative action is there to fix it. This comes back to how we cannot create a perfect society, therefore we make great strives to get there.
